Wind and sun complement each other and often alternate. There are simply more hours of sunshine in the summer and the wind is often stronger in the winter. Together, these sources can provide electricity through a single grid connection, making efficient use of the existing grid and eliminating the need to lay new cables for the additional amount of renewable energy.

A battery thereby maintains balance on the network. Excess generated sustainable energy is stored at peak times and returned to the grid in the event of a shortage. luwel already had wind and solar power and was looking for a cooperation partner to control the battery. Scholt Energy's experience with energy storage projects and marketing flexibility provided the confidence to enter into a partnership.

Managing flexibility & project management

The 2.3 MW wind turbine and the 4.6 MWp solar park will be controlled by Scholt Energy from January 2023. Scholt is applying curtailment in this project: in order to maintain the balance in the grid, the production of wind and solar energy is reduced in the event of an oversupply. Grid-ON, the party that has also supervised the tender for the battery, acts as project manager and coordinates the installation of the battery. Scholt Energy regulates the management and trading of the power. Scholt Energy is handling the control and trading of the power. Scholt ensures that the flexibility of the assets in this project is marketed in the most cost-effective manner.

Scholt Energy currently manages the largest pool of individual batteries deployed in the Dutch FCR market. The combined capacity of these batteries is offered to the national grid operator so that it can be used to maintain balance on the electricity grid.
